With just a day left for filing nomination papers for the post of the Vice President, the ruling BJP’s top decision-making body, the BJP parliamentary board would meet to pick the ruling NDA’s vice presidential candiadate. A parliamentary board member said the meeting is expected to be in the evening.
An alliance of 18 opposition parties, including the Congress, has already announced Gopalkrishna Gandhi as its candidate for vice presidential poll scheduled for August 5.
July 18 is the last date for filing of nominations. The electoral college for the election consists of 790 MPs of the two chambers of Parliament.
The ruling bloc enjoys an overwhelming majority in the electoral college and BJP has expressed confidence about garnering anywhere between 500 and 550 votes.
Meanwhile, the joint opposition candidate for the post of vice president Gopalkrishna Gandhi is likely to file his nomination papers on Tuesday, the last date for doing so, in the presence of top Congress leaders including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.
Sources said Gopalkrishna Gandhi, whose candidature was endorsed by 18 non-NDA parties, including the JD-U, will also be accompanied by top opposition leaders, including those from the Left parties and TMC.
“I will file my nomination papers on Tuesday,” he told PTI.
The original plan, sources said, was to file the papers today but it was delayed by a day in view of the presidential election on July 17.
Gopalkrishna Gandhi will also start his campaign soon after filing his nomination for the vice presidential election to be held on August 5.
