Amidst the ongoing feud in Uttar Pradesh’s ruling party, the convention called by SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav on January fifth postponed. Mulayam is expected to arrive in the National Capital to meet officials of Election Commission.
Senior SP leader Shivpal Yadav gave the information on twitter. Shivpal did not give any reason for the abrupt cancellation of the meeting. Shivpal in a tweet asked party workers to concentrate on their respective constituencies and work hard to win the elections.
The move comes a day after party members held a national convention declaring Akhilesh Yadav as party president.
Upstaging Mulayam Singh Yadav, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav was anointed the SP president in place of his father at a party national convention held on Sunday.
The proposal was met with a huge applause by party cadres gathered at the sprawling Janeshwar Misra Park amid chilly conditions.
Immediately Akhilesh sacked Amar Singh and removed his uncle Shivpal Yadav from the post of UP chief.
Ram Gopal yadav, a supporter of Akhilesh moved a proposal to make Mulayam Singh, the founder president of the party, as party patron and removing Shivpal Singh Yadav from the state unit post.
Minutes after Mulayam Singh Yadav termed the convention called by Ram Gopal Yadav as “unconstitutional”, the meeting unanimously decided to crown Akhilesh as head of the SP.
Ram Gopal Yadav is also expected to visit the Election Commission in Delhi today to stake claim to the Samajwadi Party’s “cycle” symbol. The Mulayam Singh Yadav faction too is expected to claim the symbol.
The two sides had engaged in mutual recriminatory expulsions with the convention called by Ram Gopal Yadav removing Akhilesh’s warring uncle Shivpal Yadav as state party chief, and showing the door to “outsider” Amar Singh, who has been blamed for the feud in the Yadav clan.
Mulayam had retorted by again expelling his cousin Ram Gopal for six years along with national vice president Kiranmoy Nanda, who chaired the convention, and general secretary Naresh Agarwal for taking part in it.
