Even though both the indices slipped from the all-time high during the day, Sensex ended the day 70 points up, to close just above the 34,000 mark. Sensex closed at 34,010.61 and Nifty closed 38.50 points in the green at 10,531.50.
Market experts said the new high was achieved on the back of big gains in the pharma and metal sectors.
Post noon, the 30-share BSE index came back to its base level, with Nifty hovering around 10,490 and Sensex hovering around 33,925. On the NSE, the 50-share Nifty fell below the key 10,500 level, at 10,492.70, barely unchanged.
But in the last hour of trade, Sensex climbed over a 100 points and Nifty soared over 50 points to close at their highest ever levels.
