Government today said that the total cost of cultivation will be covered under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana and Season based insurance schemes even if the loss is confined to a few farmers in a village.

Responding to members queries in the Rajya Sabha during the question hour, Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh clarified that under the modified insurance schemes total cost of cultivation will be covered in case of a loss without any ceiling.

Congress member Renuka Chowdhury has highlighted the anomoly as the amount of premium for coconut crop under the Coconut Palm Scheme was calculated on the basis of variability of historic data at the block level about the nut yield not on the basis of the age of palm.
She also asked whether the government would bring coconut under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana.
Agriculture Minister assured the Rajya Sabha that it would remove any anomoly in the way premium is calculated for coconut crop.

JD(U) member Sharad Yadav highlighted the lack of awareness in the farmers about how to solicit the claims under PM Fasal Bima Yojana.

Responding to his concerns, Agriculture Minister said it was states’ responsibility to choose the insurance companies under the PMFBY and the crops to be covered by them.

Radha Mohan Singh said states often delayed the decision to select the insurance companies as implementation of the scheme increased the burden on state exchequers and central exchequer.

Singh said some of the states first decided not to implement the scheme and delayed the decision.

Agriculture Minister said it’s the responsibility of the state government to select the companies and inform the farmers about the scheme.
