12 dead in Assam militant attack; CM vows action

Twelve civilians have been killed and 18 others are said to be injured after a group of heavily armed militants attacked a crowded market place in Assam’s Kokrajhar district. The incident happened on Friday afternoon.

Police say a group of militants opened fire after they got off from a car in Balajan Tiniali market. The security forces patrolling the area retaliated and managed to shoot dead one militant.

Some of militants are still suspected to have gone into hiding in nearby buildings.

Police is carrying out search operations and the entire area has been cordoned off.

So far, the police have recovered 13 bodies in all. Several of those who are injured in the attack, are said to critical.

Assam Chief Minister has Sarbananda Sonowal condemned the attack and has vowed to take strict action against the militants.

“Our Govt will take stern action against these extremist outfits… Our Govt is committed to protect of people of Assam…I have directed senior officials to rush to the spot… Our Prime Minister and Home Minister have also discussed the matter with me a few minutes back. They expressed their condolences,” said CM Sonowal.

The CM also added that state finance, education and health ministers have rushed to the spot to assess the situation.

“I think details are still coming in so we have to wait for some time to find out the confirmed number of killings and the number of extremists neutralised by security forces…Bodoland territorial council chief Hagrama Mohillary has said that 12 persons are on the list of those killed. This is his version,” said state Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

“We have launched an intensive operation,” said Assam Director General of Police Mukesh Sahay.
