At a time when the country is celebrating Ira Singhal’s success in topping UPSC, the fact remains that nearly 14,000 posts earmarked for persons with disabilities have been lying vacant in various central government ministries, banks and PSUs.

Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh said in a written reply in Rajya Sabha on Thursday that the Centre has asked all concerned to carry out a special drive to fill these vacancies.

As per the data received from various departments, nationalised banks, financial institutions, central public sector undertakings, among others, there were 14,267 vacancies identified for persons with disabilities, he said.

These included backlog vacancies carried forward from earlier years. “Out of these 14,267 vacancies, 2,990 vacancies identified were in respect of Group A or equivalent posts,” the MoS PMO said.

The government had issued instructions in May this year to all concerned to take immediate necessary action for filling up of vacancies for persons with disabilities and to launch a special recruitment drive to fill up these vacancies by February 2016, he said.
