6.8 magnitude quake hits Myanmar, North East India

MyanmarA powerful earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale shook several parts in Myanmar and areas on the east and northeast India.

According to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre the epicentre was 190 km SW of Mandalay in Myanmar.

According to National Centre for Seismology, a unit of Ministry of Earth Sciences, the epicenter of the quake was in Myanmar and it occurred at 4:04 PM at a depth of 58 kms.

Tremors of earthquake were felt several parts of Bihar, Kolkata and Guwahati and people evacuated their houses after tremors were felt in Patna. There were no immediate reports of loss to life or property.

West Bengal government has suspended all metro services temporarily in Kolkata to safeguard passengers.

The northeast is one of the most earthquake prone regions in the world.
