Leaders across the country greeted citizens on the occasion of 69th Republic Day. The Republic Day celebrations, a show of India’s military prowess, culture and diversity will also be a testimony of its growing stature in the global order. Leaders of the 10 ASEAN nations are attending the event at the Rajpath as chief guests.
Leading the greetings after President Ram Nath Kovind’s address to the nation last night, Prime Minister Modi tweeted, “Greetings on #RepublicDay. Jai Hind”.
This Republic Day parade featured a march past by the Army personnel carrying the ASEAN flag. Besides, 23 tableaux, including those representing various states, ministries, the All India Radio (AIR) among others, will roll down the Rajpath.
The city has been wrapped in an unprecedented security blanket with thousands of security personnel keeping a hawk- eyed vigil to prevent any terror strike or untoward incident during the celebrations.
Leaders of 10 ASEAN countries today attended India’s Republic Day celebrations as chief guests at the majestic Rajpath, signifying India’s growing ties with the powerful grouping. The ASEAN leaders joined President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Republic Day parade, making it an unprecedented event.
Myanmar’s State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, Vietnam Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte, Thai Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha, Singaporean Premier Lee Hsien Loong, Brunei’s Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah attended the event.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, Prime Minister of Laos Thongloun Sisoulith and Cambodian Premier Hun Sen also watched the grand parade.
The participation of the ASEAN leaders at the event comes amid China’s growing efforts to expand its influence in the region.
On Thursday, India and ASEAN held a commemorative summit celebrating 25 years of their ties.
