Rahul Gandhi has once again hit out at the Prime Minister on the issue of agrarian crises and distress among the farmer community. On his ‘Save Farmer’ march in Odisha, the Congress vice president Thursday accused Narendra Modi-led central government of neglecting farmers. Criticising the Prime Minister directly, the young leader remarked when will the promised ‘Achche Din’ come for the farmers.
“He (Modi) has made promises. He is good at making promises… But he failed to fulfil even one,” Rahul Gandhi told the press pack in Odisha adding “When will the achche din come for the farmers?”
Incidentally, Prime Minister Modi earlier in the day had criticised Congress party chief and Rahul’s mother Sonia Gandhi for her party’s stand on the crucial GST Bill and her ‘hawabaazi’ jibe.
Embarking on a padyatra, the Congress Vice President met with the family members of Sanand Kathar, a farm worker who had recently committed suicide due to abject poverty. Claiming that suicide by distressed farmers has risen “substantially”, the Congress leader once again accused the Modi government of working in the interest of “two-three” hand-picked corporate people.
Once again terming the BJP-led NDA government as the ‘Suit Boot ki Sarkaar’, Gandhi added that the Congress-led UPA had waived farm loans to the tune of Rs 70,000 crore but the BJP government had thus far paid little or no attention to needs of the farmers.
“BJP-led NDA seeks to snatch away precious land from poor farmers and dislodge them without seeking their views. The Centre wants to hand over peasants’ land to corporates,” Rahul Gandhi said while launching his ‘Save Farmer March’ at Debahal town of Odisha.
The 45-year-old, tipped to be the next chief of the grand old party also accused the Centre of scrapping various steps taken by Congress-led UPA government for the welfare and progress of the farmers.
“Congress always worked to safeguard the interest of peasants and the land acquisition measure brought by it provided for adequate compensation,” Rahul Gandhi said.
Speaking about the Land Acquisition Bill as brought in by the Congress-led UPA government, Rahul Gandhi asserted that the legislation was brought only after thoroughly consulting the farmers and other stakeholders in farming community. Hitting out at the BJP he claimed that the ruling party was bent upon snatching land from peasants without seeking their views and had brought Ordinance twice for the purpose.
During his padyatra, he also targeted the incumbent Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik. Calling CM Patnaik no different from the Prime Minister, Rahul Gandhi said that both were “friends”.
The Congress Vice President is currently on a two-day visit to Odisha where the party is out of power for the past over 15 years.
