AIADMK party’s split over the succession issue and the demand for an official probe into former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalith today echoed in the parliament.
Some AIADMK MPs demanded a central probe into the circumstances leading to the death of their leaders in both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha.
In the Rajya Sabha, no later than the deputy chairman PJ Kurien finished with the announcement by the chair, AIADMK members V Maitreyan and Sasikala Pushpa rushed to the well of the house holding photographs of deceased leader J. Jayalalitha demanding a central probe in to her death.
However, they allowed Home Minister Rajnath Singh to make a statement on the terror blast in Bhopal-Ujjain passenger and subsequent encounter in Lucknow after they were persuaded by deputy chairman Kurien.
Later, V Maitreyan raised the issue during the zero hour as his notice on the issue was accepted by the chairman, Rajya Sabha.
Maitreyan said: “With deep anguish and agony I demand a central probe into the death of our beloved leade.”
Maitreyan said Jayalalitha was admitted to hospital on the complaint of dehydration and as per the hospital’s statement she was responding to the treatment.
Maitreyan demanded a central probe saying the probe could be conducted by CBI or a SIT or some judicial inquiry.
However, his statement was constantly disrupted by his party colleague Vijila Sathyananth much to chagrin of deputy chairman PJ Kurien who repeatedly warned her to allow Maitreyan to finish with his statement.
The Deputy Chairman also warned he would taken action against her.
“You are a lady member. I respect you. You are my sister, (But) that does not mean you can misbehave,” he said, adding that he would have taken action had any other male member done so.
In the Lok Sabha similar scene played out, leading to a brief adjournment in the Lok Sabha.
As soon as the Lok Sabha met for the day, six AIADMK members rushed to the Well raising slogans seeking a CBI probe into the death of the then Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. They were holding placards with the picture of Jayalalithaa laying in state.
Amid slogan-shouting by them, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan adjourned the House for 10 minutes at 11.10 am when the Question Hour was in progress.
Soon after the House re-assembled, the AIADMK members again raised slogans and then staged a walk-out after their demand for an adjournment motion to discuss the issue was turned down by the Chair.
While a section of the AIADMK MPs are supporting V K Sasikala, some others are with former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam.
