Hundreds of AIADMK workers gathered in front of the Apollo Hospitals in Chennai where Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa is undergoing treatment after suffering cardiac arrest on Sunday evening.

With the hospital saying that Jayalalithaa has become “very critical”, the crowds have begun to desperately pray for her health.

Emotions ran high among supporters of the 68-year-old leader, popularly known as “Amma”, or “Mother” in Tamil. Supporters could be seen in tears as they stood praying for their leader.

Supporters sought divine intervention for their leader’s quick recovery. Some dejected workers were also seen wailing after the news that her health had deteriorated.

Some party workers from several districts like Parimala of Tiruvannamalai and Subramanian of North Chennai told PTI that “We are waiting. We are confident that we will get good news soon.”

With more and more people gathering around the premises and lining up the approach roads, resulted in traffic congestion in the neighbourhood. Extra security men have been called in to keep the law and order situation under control. Police was having a tough time regulating the crowd and ensuring that other patients are not inconvenienced.

Even though no government holiday has been announced, some schools remained closed. But shops and commercial establishments largely remained open.
