Speculations are rife that there might be a truce in the Yadav clan after UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav met his father Mulayam Singh Yadav in Lucknow.

Reports say that Akhilesh first spoke to Mulayam on the phone and then later in the day met his father at his residence once Mulayam flew back to Lucknow from Delhi.

The father and son were together for over two hours. Shivpal Yadav, Mulayam’s brother who is at loggerheads with Akhilesh, also joined them after returning from Delhi.

Even though there has been no official word from either faction post the meeting, efforts are on to broker a patch-up.

However, a senior party leader close to Akhilesh told PTI that “it too late. There is no scope for any settlement. EC will decide who will have SP’s cycle”.

Both Mulayam and Akhilesh factions of Samajwadi Party have staked claim over the party and its cycle symbol before Election Commission.

Akhilesh’s camp told the Election Commission that the party was “actually” headed by Akhilesh and not its founder Mulayam Singh.

“The real Samajwadi Party belongs to us as 90 per cent of the people support us,” Ram Gopal, who is Mulayam’s cousin and has sided with Akhilesh in the family feud, told reporters after meeting the Commission.

On Monday, Mulayam himself drove down to Nirvachan Sadan, the EC headquarters, to inform the poll watchdog that he continues to head the party and the decision to anoint his son Akhilesh as its president by the rival faction was unconstitutional as per the SP constitution.

The decision on who gets to claim the party symbol lies with the Election Commission.

Experts say, as an interim measure, the EC will mostly freeze the cycle symbol and ask the two factions to contest on a new symbol.

Sources have revealed that the Election Commission is likely to announce poll dates as early as tomorrow. (Jan 4)

On Sunday, at a party convention called by Ram Gopal Yadav, Akhilesh was crowned as the national president of the party and Mulayam was named a party patron.

On the other hand, Mulayam deferred the January 5 party convention called by him. Both Mulayam and Shivpal Yadav rejected Akhilesh as the new party chief and declared the convention called by Ram Gopal Yadav as unconstitutional.

Two days ago, Mulayam had expelled his son Akhilesh and his cousin Ram Gopal Yadav from the party only to revoke the expulsion a day later.
