BSP chief and Rajya Sabha member Mayawati today met Hamid Ansari, Chairman, Rajya Sabha in person and submitted her resignation to him. Mayawati had walked out of the upper house in protest Tuesday morning when she was asked by the deputy chairman of the house PJ Kurien  to end her impromptu speech on the issue of atrocities on Dalits in the country.

She alleged that she was not being allowed by the government to speak in the house on the issues of atrocities on Dalits. Her resignation comes nine months before her term expires in April 2018.

“The Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman instead of asking the ruling party MPs to remain quiet, rang the bell and told me to sit down,” said the Dalit leader while referring to PJ Kurien repeatedly asking her to end her impromptu speech in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday morning.

Earlier in the day too the BSP chief threatened to resign on the floor of the House after she alleged that she wasn’t allowed to speak on the issue of violence against Dalits.

Mayawati raised the issue as soon as the House began on Tuesday morning.

“I will resign from Rajya Sabha today,” a visibly angry Mayawati told Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman P J Kurien when he asked her to wrap up her impromptu speech on Dalit violence in Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh.

“I have no moral right to be in the House if I am not allowed to put across my views on atrocities being committed against Dalits,” she said. “I am going to resign from the house,” Mayawati said before walking out of the House in a huff.

The BSP chief’s term in the Rajya Sabha ends on April 2018.

She also addressed a press conference outside the Parliament after the Opposition walked out and the Upper House was adjourned.

“This is the reason I have decided to quit from Rajya Sabha, I am not being heard, not allowed to speak,” Mayawati alleged.
