Indian army foiled a major infiltration bid in the Gurez sector of Kashmir, killing five heavily-armed militants on Friday as they tried to sneak in from the Pakistani side. According to the army, an intense gunfight between army personnel and the militants began soon after the latter crossed the Line of Control (LoC) in the wee hours. The encounter lasted till Friday afternoon.

“Five terrorists were eliminated by the Army while they were trying to infiltrate across the LoC in Gurez sector. The alert soldiers thus effectively foiled the infiltration bid,” Srinagar-based Defence spokesman Lt Col NN Joshi told the press giving details about the developments.

Army spokesperson added that an intense gunfight ensued soon as the militants were challenged, resulting in elimination of all the militants.

“A huge cache of “war-like” stores of arms and ammunition was recovered from them. It included five AK-47 rifles, a Rocket Projectile Gun (RPG) and an Under Barrel Grenade Launcher (UBGL),” Lt Col Joshi said.

Meanwhile, the Army is continuing with its search operation to ensure safety and security of the people.

According to the official information, the identity of the slain militants and their group has not been ascertained so far.

LoC-firing-PoonchIn a separate development, the Pakistan forces continue to violate the ceasefire understanding, resorting to the firing and shelling in the forward areas along Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir for the fourth consecutive day. An Army jawan and a villager were left injured due to the firing and shelling from across the LoC.

According to the Defence spokesperson, Pakistan troops fired mortar bombs and used automatic weapons to target forward posts along LoC in Balakote sector of Poonch district around 6:00 AM in the morning.

“One Army jawan was injured and has been hospitalised. They fired 120 mm, 82 mm mortars, Rocket Projectile Grenades (RPGs) and automatic weapons along LoC,” the Defence spokesperson said adding that the Indian troops retaliated “appropriately” to the Pakistani firing.

A civilian, identified as Mohmmad Ashraf (24) was also injured and some cattle were killed in Behrooti village, the local police said. The youth has been hospitalised and continues to undergo treatment for injuries.

Earlier too, the Pakistan troops violated ceasefire twice during the night and resorted to mortar shelling and firing on military posts and civilians areas along LoC in Hamirpur and Mendhar sectors of Poonch district in the wee hours on Friday.

Pakistani troops have violated the ceasefire 25 times in September this year. This is fourth day of ceasefire violation by Pakistan along LoC in Poonch since September 15.
