The Election Commission has announced the dates for the upcoming assembly polls in the five states of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, Uttarakhand and Manipur.
Polling begins as early as February 4 and counting for all the five states will be held on march 11. Goa, Punjab and Uttarakhand will hold polls in a single phase, while Manipur will see a two-phase poll and the massive Uttar Pradesh will hold polls in seven phases.
Polling in Goa (40 constituencies) and Punjab (117 constituencies) will be held on February 4. The last date of nomination for candidates in both these states will be January 18.
In Manipur (60 constituencies) polling will be held on March 4 and March 8 for the two phases.
38 constituencies will witness polls in phase 1, while the other 22 constituencies will hold polls on March 8 in the second phase. The last date for nominations of the candidates are February 15 and February 18 for the two phases. In Uttarakhand which has 70 constituencies, polling will be held on February 15. The last date for nomination for candidates is January 27.
Uttar Pradesh with 403 assembly constituencies will see a seven-phase poll. The dates of polling in UP are Feb 11, Feb 15 , Feb 19, Feb 23, Feb 27, March 4 and March 8.
Phase 1 of UP polls will see polls in 73 constituencies spread across 15 districts that include Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, Bapat, Meerut, Bulandshar, Aligarh and Mathura. The last date of nomination for candidates for these 73 seats will be January 24 and the polling takes place on February 11.
Phase 2 in UP will see polling in 67 constituencies spread over 11 districts that mainly border Uttarakhand in Western UP. Polling here will be held on February 15.
Phase 3 will see 69 constituencies polling which are spread over 12 districts that include capital Lucknow and Etawah. Here, polling takes place on February 19.
Phase 5 with 52 constituencies will go to polls on February 24. 11 districts including Sultanpur, Faizabad and Rahul Gandhi’s constituency Amethi will go to polls in this phase.
Phase 6 with 49 constituencies spread over 7 districts which include Gorakhpur and Azamgarh will go to polls on March 4.
The last and final phase of polling in UP will be held on March 8. In this crucial phase PM Modi’s Varanasi, Ghazipur, Chandauli and Mirzapur are the districts which will be polling. A total of 40 constituencies spread over 7 districts will poll on this day.
Apart from announcing the dates for polling, the Election Commission also said that the model code of conduct has already come into effect. It discouraged the use of black money in the polls and clearly stated that any donation, loan or expense over ₹ 20 thousand will have to be made by cheque or draft.
