Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with 1500 beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Centre’s one of flagship programmes. The interaction took place across 750 districts through video conferencing this morning, where Modi emphasised that his government is committed to give importance to the housing sector and aims to provide home to every Indian by 2022.
“Every human desires his or her own house. A person becomes much happier when he or she has a house. The Awas Yojana is not merely about brick and mortar. It is about a better quality of life and dreams coming true,” he said.
The government is working to free the housing sector from corruption and middlemen and they are targeting to build three crore rural homes and one crore urban homes by 2022, he said.
The prime minister also said that the govt’s objective is to ensure houses for women, disabled, and people from the SC, ST, OBC and minority communities.
“The focus is to ensure more women, Divyang sisters and brothers, people from SC, ST, OBC and Minority communities get access to housing. PMAY is linked with dignity of our citizens,” he said.
Modi said the PMAY is also creating employment opportunities for people. “At the same time, we are working on skill development to enable faster and better quality construction of the houses,” he said.
“The NDA Government is giving great importance to the housing sector. We are working towards ensuring that every Indian has a home by 2022, when India marks 75 years since Independence,” Prime Minister Modi said.
PM Modi had launched the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin in November 2016 with a target of building 1 crore houses by March 31, 2019.
So far, more than 76 lakh beneficiaries have been sanctioned houses and over 63 lakh beneficiaries have received 1st installment.
