Union Ministers M Venkaiah Naidu, Birender Singh, Nirmala Sitharaman, Piyush Goyal and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi are set to return to the Upper House after BJP decided to renominate all ministers.
BJP announced 12 candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections scheduled to be held on June 11. Apart from Union Ministers, party has nominated its vice presidents Om Prakash Mathur and Purushottam Rupala from Rajasthan and Gujarat respectively.
BJP has picked former Bihar state president Gopal Narain Singh putting full stop to speculations that former deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi could be its choice.
“Venkaiah Naidu, Singh, Sitharaman, Goyal and Naqvi will be representing Rajasthan, Haryana, Karnataka, Maharshtra and Jharkhand,” the party said in a statement.
Other nominees are Harsh Vardhan Singh and Ram Kumar Verma from Rajasthan, Anil Madhav Dave from Madhya Pradesh and Ramvichar Netam from Chhattisgarh.
Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu is expected to be nominated again after Telugu Desam Party decided to back the candidature of Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu for Rajya Sabha from Andhra Pradesh.
May 31 being the last date for filing nomination, the party is set to announce the remaining two names on Monday. BJP sources said general secretary Ram Madhav and vice president Vinay Sahasrabuddhe are also in contention for party ticket.
Biennial polls are being held for 57 seats and 14 BJP members are retiring. BJP is expected to win 18-19 seats due to its sizeable strength in states like Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Rajasthan and Haryana.
