At least 33 people, including four children, were killed and seven others were injured when a bus plunged into Banas river in Rajasthan’s Sawai Madhopur district on Saturday morning.
The bus, which was carrying 45 passengers, is said to have veered off a bridge when the driver lost control of it. It broke the railing of the bridge before plunging into the river. It was en route to Sawai Madhopur from Lalsot.
According to SHO Anoop Singh of Soorwal police station, of the 33 people killed, seven were women and four were children. The driver of the bus was also killed in the accident.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the incident and said his thoughts were with the families of the deceased.
“State government is closely monitoring the situation, including rescue operations and providing all possible assistance to those affected,” the Prime Minister’s Office tweeted.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje too condoled the deaths.
“I am saddened by the bus accident that took place in Dubi Banas. Took stock of the situation from the officials present on the spot and directed them to provide all possible assistance to the affected people,” she said in a tweet.
