Congress steps up protest; demands Raje to step down

vasu Congress party is not letting the heat off Rajasthan Chief Minister in Lalit Modi controversy. In a massive protest, which was also a statement of unity in the faction-ridden state unit, the party once again demanded Raje’s resignation.

The Rajasthan CM is facing allegations of helping out controversial Lalit Modi, former boss of the popular cricket tournament IPL, in his immigration to UK on conditions of secrecy from Indian authorities. Apart from that, her son Dushyant Singh is also under attack over the reports of his company receiving Rs 11.63 crore in investments from Lalit Modi in 2008. Dushyant Singh is BJP Lok Sabha MP from Rajasthan.

Protesting in the state capital Jaipur, Congress party stepped up attack on CM Raje as well the ruling party BJP.

“The allegations that are almost proven now and that CM Vasundhara Raje must resign. Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje must resign to give way to a fair investigation,” PCC chief Sachin Pilot said while holding a protest march.

“The minister is giving in writing that they lent help to Lalit Modi and BJP is giving them clean-chit. How far will this double standard go?” he added attacking the ruling party.

The principal opposition party has been consistently taking on the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre over this controversy, even targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his silence.

The Central government has now once again reiterated that the investigations in this issue will go on. Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who is on a 10-day visit to US, told that the Indian agencies will continue to probe the matter till its conclusion.

“The government will play by the rule book and we will make sure that the absolute standards of probity are maintained,” Arun Jaitley said.

The Union Finance Minister, who is also among the senior-most in the party leadership, gave signals of Central government willing to discuss the issue with the opposition parties even on the floor of Parliament House.

“We are willing to have a discussion on any subject that the Opposition wants,” he said.

Earlier this week while spelling its aggressive stand over the issue, the leader of Congress party in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge spoke about taking on Modi-led government in the Parliament over the issue in an upcoming Monsoon session.

“The Congress party will raise it in parliament and in the state assembly sessions,” senior Congress leader had said.

Apart from Vasundhra Raje, Union External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj is also facing allegations of helping out former IPL boss Lalit Modi with his travel papers last year at the time when his passport was under revocation by the Indian authorities. While the Rajasthan CM is facing questions over the allegations of helping out Lalit Modi for his immigration to UK on the terms of strict secrecy.

Ever since the controversy has broken out, Congress party has resorted to an aggressive posture demanding resignation of two.
The issue of two of its prominent leaders caught in Lalit Modi controversy has even got BJP leadership worried with reports of BJP President Amit Shah meeting Prime Minister Modi last week to discuss the possible fallouts of the entire episode.
