Congress takes its protest inside Rajya Sabha

Anand_rajyaThe echo of Congress party’s ‘Save Democracy’ march was heard inside the Parliament with party MPs raising protest on the floor of the Upper House leading the Chair to briefly adjourn the house during Question Hour. Congress party president Sonia Gandhi, her deputy Rahul Gandhi and former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh had earlier courted arrest during their march against the Modi government early on Friday.

Targeting the Central government in Rajya Sabha, deputy Opposition leader Anand Sharma said, “We were protesting against the assault on the democracy by this government”.

loktantra pe jo prahar ho raha hai uske khilaf pradarshan kiya hai (Our protest was against the assault on democracy)” Sharma said adding, “former Prime Minister, senior leadership of the Congress party, chief Sonia Gandhi and the MPs all were arrested”.

As Congress members stepped up its protest, Chairman Md. Hamid Ansari urged them not to disrupt the Question Hour.

But the Congress MPs were adamant in their protest even resorting to mild sloganeering. As they attempted to march inside the Well of House, the Chairman adjourned the house for a brief while.

The two have off-late engaged in a bitter tiff on the host of issues both inside and outside the Parliament. The Upper House has seen several adjournments due to Congress party’s protest in the current session of Parliament.

Earlier in the day, the principal opposition party went on an offensive taking out protest march against the BJP-led central government protesting against the imposition of President’s rule in Congress-ruled states of Uttarakhand and Arunachal Pradesh and the issues like drought and agrarian distress in the country.

Congress party’s ‘Save Demorcay’ march came amid its wrangle with Modi government on the issue of controversy over AgustaWestland VVIP chopper deal, where it is alleging that the ruling party is unfairly targeting its top leadership.

BJP has been targeting the top leadership of Congress party ever since the ruling from an Italian court, which had observed an alleged payment to bribes by the Agusta officials to the Congress leaders.
