Darjeeling: Center rushes additional forces as protests intensify

As the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha sponsored indefinite shutdown enters fifth day in Darjeeling, Union Government rushed in additional forces to maintain peace in the region hit by protests.

Gorkhaland Territorial Administration offices and buildings belonging to state an central government have the highest level of security cover.

“400 paramilitary personnel have been sent to Darjeeling to help the local administration restore peace. These are in addition to around 1000 personnel, including 200 women, already stationed there,” said an official.

The GJP intensified its protest after West Bengal Police raided their chief’s offices and housed and recovered arms. Agitators have issued a call to tourists to leave the queen of the hills- Darjeeling

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is under fire from the opposition especially Congress and the BJP for raking up the issue that has led to the revival of the demand for a separate Gorkhaland.

Both BJP and GJM met Home Minister Rajnath Singh and sought the Centre’s intervention on the matter.

Amid violent protests in the hills, state government transferred Darjeeling Deputy Superintendent of Police Pradip Kumar Singha and replaced him with Avijit Mitra.  Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner, Central, Akhilesh Chaturvedi was made the new SP of Darjeeling.

The state government had earlier replaced Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) principal secretary Ravi Inder Singh and brought in Barun Ray and appointed C Murugan as the new secretary of GTA in place of Donbosco Lepcha.
