A day after winning the right over the cycle symbol from the Election Commission, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav spoke about his ties with his father Mulayam Singh.

“We will take ‘netaji’ (Mulayam Singh Yadav) along as ties with him are unbreakable,” said Akhilesh after Election Commission favoured Akhilesh over his father Mulayam, to use the Samajwadi Party symbol.

A mere look at the figures of supporting MLAs, MLCs and MPs, National Executive members and National Convention delegates will evidently demonstrate that Shri Akhilesh Yadav enjoys overwhelming majority support, both among the organisational and legislative wing of the party”, the EC had said in its order on Monday evening.

In taking its decision, the Election Commission made it clear that the Samajwadi Party belonged to Akhilesh Yadav. This came as a big setback for the Mulayam faction.

“I was confident that I will get cycle. Less time is left, I will finalise the list of candidates. It’s a big responsibility and I will take everyone with us,” Akhilesh said on Tuesday morning, the same day that Congress’ Ghulam Nabi Azad confirmed the alliance with Samajwadi Party.

After winning the party symbol, Akhilesh met his father Mulayam late on Monday night and later tweeted three old pictures one with father and two of the January 1 national convention with the message “cycle chalti jayegi, aage badte jayegi” (cycle will keep running, and keep moving ahead).

A number of party workers, legislators and ministers reached his residence early in the morning even as hordes of ticket seekers swarmed the SP headquarters close by.

On the other hand, Mulayam stayed put in his bungalow, which is at a stone’s throw distance from the chief minister’s residence and met brother Shivpal Yadav among others.
