Aam Aadmi Party-run Delhi government and the office of Delhi Lt Governor are on course of another confrontation. This time, over the appointment of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Chairperson. LG Najeeb Jung has rejected the appointment of Swati Maliwal as the Chairperson of Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Wednesday, declaring her nomination “null and void”.

The LG office went on to say that the appointment of Ms Maliwal did not have legal sanctity and was in violation of constitutional provisions. Swati Maliwal was appointed as the Chairperson of DCW on the 17th July.

30-year old Swati Maliwal is wife of Arvind Kejriwal confidant and prominent AAP leader Naveen Jaihind. Prior to her appointment as the DCW chief, she was working as an Advisor to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on public grievances.

In its note, the LG’s office referred to the Home Ministry order citing that the ‘Government’ meant “Lieutenant Governor of the National Capital Territory of Delhi” appointed by the President.

Insisting that LG was sole authority in deciding on major issues including appointment to top positions, the note from the LG Jung’s office read, “the constitutionally valid consistent definition of Government is the Lieutenant Governor of the National Capital Territory of Delhi appointed by the President under Article 239 and designated as such under article 239 AA of the Constitution”.

However, on her part, Swati Maliwal claimed of not receiving any letter from the office of LG Nazeeb Jung. Terming the matter as a “minor” issue, she said that she respects the “constitutionality” of LG’s office.

“I think this is a minor technical glitch because what is being said is that the file (my appointment) was not sent to LG’s office. I think it will get resolved. It is not a very major issue,” Maliwal told the press on Wednesday.

“I have not received any communication from the LG’s office or the Delhi government on the issue. I am doing my work. I will continue doing my work whether I remain in the post or not,” she added further.

Meanwhile, Both BJP and Congress attack the AAP government over the Maliwal’s appointment as DCW chief.

Referring to reports claiming that Naveen Jaihind and CM Kejriwal were relatives, BJP’s Delhi unit president Satish Upadhyay questioned whether the Delhi CM on encouraging nepotism. While, the Congress party also criticised AAP for promoting only few members of the party.
