More than 550 people, including a legislator were arrested across Jharkhand during the 24-hour bandh called by Jharkhand Mukti Morcha.
Two vehicles were set on fire and some others damaged in the state during the bandh apart from a stationary bus torched by bandh supporters in the early hours in Jamshedpur
“Glass panes of some vehicles were broken and blockades were put up in Kolhan region,” said the Deputy Superintendent of Police K N Mishra.
According to police officials, more than 550 people were arrested across the state when they were trying to enforce the bandh. Of them, 450 people were arrested in Serailela-Kharswan district alone.
“JMM MLA Dasrath Gagrai was arrested along with 50 other supporters from Kharswan area this morning,” said SP Indrajit Mahatha.
RJD, CPI and Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) are supporting the bandh.
“We are giving moral support to the bandh called by JMM,” said Manoj Kumar who is the spokesman of the party in Jharkhand.
JMM has called the bandh in protest against the state’s recently announced domicile policy that defines anybody who has lived in Jharkhand for thirty or more years and has immovable property as the resident of the state.
JMM demands that 1932 survey should be made the cut off mark for eligibility of being a resident.
Jharkhand Mukti Morcha Supremo Shibu Soren on Friday alleged that the domicile policy defined by the NDA government in Jharkhand deprives tribals and native people of their rights.
“The domicile policy defined by the state government is not in the interest of the people as it deprives the rights of adivasis and moolwasis, which JMM will not tolerate,” said Shibu Soren.
