Vice Presidential Election to be held on August 5: EC

Election Commission of India has announced the date of election for the post of the Vice President of India. The poll will be held on August 5, 2017 between 10 am and 5 pm.

The term of the present incumbent Vice President, Md Hamid Ansari, who has held the post for two consecutive terms, is set to end on August 10, 2017.

As per the schedule announced by the Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi, the notification for the election will be released on  July 4. Candidates can file nominations till July 18, 2017.

Commission of India has appointed Rajya Sabha Secretary General, Shumsher K Sheriff as the Returning Officer. It has also decided to recruit officers from Rajya Sabha Secretariat to assist Mr. Sheriff.

The electoral college which elects the Vice President, who is also the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, consists of elected and nominated members of the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha.

The total strength of the two Houses is 790, but there are some vacancies.

Meanwhile, the EC also announced the date of election to the Rajya Sabha seat from Goa.

Congress’ Shantaram Naik is retiring on July 28, and the election to the seat will take place on July 21. The counting of votes will be held the same evening.

Naik, the EC officials said, will be able to cast his vote for the July 17 Presidential poll.

Meanwhile, NDA and the opposition are yet to decide on the candidate who will contest for the post of Vice President of India.
