Election Commission of India has announced schedules for the biennial elections to Rajya Sabha from Gujarat and West Bengal for nine seats will be held on August 8.
EC has also announced by-election from Madhya Pradesh where a casual vacancy has arisen following the death of former Union Environment Minister Anil Madhav Dave on May 18. His term was till June 2022.
The term of office of nine members of the Rajya Sabha elected from Gujarat and West Bengal is due to expire in August.
The term of office of three members of the Rajya Sabha elected from Gujarat– Patel Ahmed Mohammedbhai, Pandya Dilipbhai Shivshankarbhai and Union Textiles Minister Smriti Zubin Irani, is set to expire on August 18.
Similarly, six members of the Rajya Sabha elected from West Bengal — AITC member Derek O’Brien, Debabrata Bandyopadhyay, Pradip Bhattacharya, CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury, Sukhendusekhar Roy and Dola Sen are also completing their term on August 18.
As per the commission, notifications for the polls will be issued on July 21 while the last date of making nominations will be July 28.
EC will take-up scrutiny on July 29 and the last date for withdrawal of candidatures will be July 31. Counting of votes will be taken up on August 8.
