Legendary actress, dancer and theatre personality Zohra Saigal, also known as Zohra Sehgal passed away at the age of 102. A Padham Vibhushan awarded Sehgal breathed her last at Max hospital in New Delhi around 4:30 PM on Thursday.
Prime Minister Narendera Modi tweeted that he is saddened by her demise.’Prolific & full of life, Zohra Sehgal made a mark through her acting, which is admired across generations. Saddened on her demise’ he tweeted.
“She died of a cardiac arrest this afternoon. She was unwell for last three-four days,” her daughter Kiran told.
Sehgal was cremated on Friday at 11 AM at the Lodhi Road crematorium.
Many known faces were present on the crematorium of the grand old lady of bollywood including Ex-CM of Delhi and Governor of Kerala Shiela Dixit, writer-lyricist Javed Akhtar and his wife Shabana Azmi; theatre director M.K. Raina who made a documentary on her, actor Roshan Seth, Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar.
Zohra Saigal, a Padma Vibhushan awardee, was a film, TV and theatre personality and a great dancer. Saigal a lively personality started her career as a dancer with Ustad Uday Shankar in 1935. She travelled and worked with him for some years.
Zohra Saigal joined the Prithvi Theatre in 1945. She made her film debut in 1946, appearing first in Dharti Ke Lal and then A Neecha Nagar. She last appeared in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya in 2007. Sehgal had acted in many Hindi films including Veer-Zara, Dil se, Saaya, Cheeni-Kum and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam besides Hollywood movies such as The Vengeance of She, Tales that Witness Madness, Never Say Die, Little Napoleons and Bend It like Beckham among others.
Among the many honours that Ms Saigal won were three of India’s four civilian awards – the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan.
Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who had worked with Sehgal tweeted on her death, “Zohra Sehgal… she epitomised life, living and its zest . A spirit that could shame a teenager, and a smile that lit up,” Bachchan posted.
