The Final Countdown

The countdown for the formation of the next government has begun. The counting of votes will begin at 8 am. The nine-phase polls spanning over 69 days was the longest in history wherein fate of 8,000 candidates will be decided by more than 551 million voters. The candidates in fray include BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, party vice-president Rahul Gandhi and Aam Aadmi Party convenor Arvind Kejriwal.

Exit Polls hint at an NDA govt led by Modi. Stock market and punters have placed their bets on the Gujarat chief minister as the next prime minister. Sensing the mood in its favour, BJP leaders have got into a huddle to discuss the future course of action including allocation of ministries among its top leaders.

Meanwhile, the Congress camp is gloomy after its leaders virtually conceded that the grand old party is certainly not in the reckoning this time. Pundits predict the worst performance by the party that led the government for two consecutive terms.
But, there could be a twist in the tale if NDA fails to get a majority on its own. In such a scenario, regional parties would play kingmakers. No one is ruling out the possibility of a Congress-backed Third Front government.

The high decibel campaign by political parties would come to its logical culmination today and results would be declared by 5 pm while trends would be available by 9 am.

Soon after the results are declared, winning candidates will feature in the gazette to be issued by the Election Commission. The gazette notification will initiate the process to form the next Lok Sabha.
