The opposition Congress party launched a concerted attack on the ruling Narendra Modi-led government marking one year in the office. Led by its Vice President Rahul Gandhi and armed by the senior-most leaders, Congress party charged that the one-year old BJP-led NDA government has failed at several fronts.
“On behalf of the Congress party, I would like to officially wish the ‘suit-boot sarkar’ a happy birthday,” Congress vice-President Rahul Gandhi said resuming his attack on the government.
“People felt uncomfortable, here is a country where farmers are dying, and the PM wears suit worth Rs 10 lakh…Kisaan and mazdoor have nothing to celebrate,” Rahul Gandhi told the rally at Kozhikode in Kerala.
“The PM does not seem to care about the poor. He has been all over the world but has not gone to a poor persons house. It is the job of the government to protect the farmer in difficult times. UPA gave Rs 72,000 crore loan waiver to the farmers,” added Gandhi.
Earlier in the evening, a press conference was addressed by the seniors like Ghulam Nabi Azad and Mallikarjun Kharge, the two who also double up as the leaders of the party in both the houses of Parliament.
Opening the charges against Modi government at the AICC headquarters in New Delhi, party’s spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala released a short video “Ek Saal Desh Badhaal” claiming the failures of government in its first year.
“This one year has been a government of Self, Selfies and Selfishness,” Surjewala said as he began speaking.
“If they had really worked then BJP would not have taken the pains to have 200 rallies and 2000 exhibitions,” the party’s senior spokesperson added.
In what appears to be a meticulously planned ‘charge sheet’, the Congress leaders took on NDA government on the host of issues from an unimpressive performance at the economic front to failure to generate jobs to highlighting the government’s failure to appoint the heads of various anti-corruption bodies.
“If you tie the hands of police where will you see the crime, so if no Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC), Central Information Commissioner (CIC) and Lokpal…so ‘No Corruption’,” said senior leader Ghulam Nabi Azad.
“The Prime Minister is claiming prices are down, but prices of pulses, milk and petrol have risen. Even Railway fares have risen. How many SMART cities have you seen?” asked the Congress party’s leader in Rajya Sabha.
Taking its attack ahead, the principal opposition party questioned the government on its flagship scheme like Jan Dhan Yojana, insurance schemes among others.
“Only 8000 people benefited from Jan Dhan Yojana…If PM claims that Rs. 27000 crores of PF Amount is lying unused, then why did the Trade Unions oppose it’s distribution?,” Mallikarjuna Kharge, its leader in Lok Sabha said.
“You are doing 5000 public meetings, but no Minister was told by Mr Modi to visit farmers in distress,” Kharge charged the Prime Minister as he took on the NDA government on what it terms ‘anti-farmer’ and ‘anti-poor’ policies.
