Five newly elected and re-elected Members of Rajya Sabha have taken oath on Tuesday in presence of Rajya Sabha Chairman Md. Hamid Ansari in the Parliament House.
These five members represent the State of Gujarat, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu and YSR Congress leader Pradesh Venumbak Vijayasai Reddy represent the state of Andhra Pradesh while Senior BJP leader Puroshattam Rupala comes from Gujarat. The other two leaders include Captain Laxmikant Rao Voditola and Dharampuri Srinawas of TRS who represent the state of Telangana.
The oath ceremony was attended by Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, P J Kurien, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu along with other leaders.
The election to 57 seats of Rajya Sabha was necessitated after the term of office of sitting members expired. Of the total vacant seats, 30 members were elected to the upper house without any election while other 27 were elected with election in respective states.
The party wise division of these 27 seats is: BJP – 11, SP – 7, Congress – 6, BSP – 2 and two independents.
Elections to the 27 seats of the upper house were held on June 11 while the notification for the polls was issued on May 24 by the Election Commission of India.
Remaining 52 members are scheduled to take oath before the beginning of the monsoon session of Parliament and first time elected members will undergo an orientation programme to understand Parliamentary procedures.
Each elected member will have to be part of various committees like Department related Parliamentary Standing Committees to discuss on all important issues.
The Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs chaired by Home Minister Rajnath Singh, will meet tomorrow to decide the schedule of the Monsoon session, which is expected to start in the third week of July.
