Gadkari: Media trying to vilify Yogi Adityanath

Union Minister for Transport, Shipping & Highways, Nitin Gadkari has aggressively defended the anointment of firebrand Hindutva Leader Yogi Adityanath as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh stressing that media is trying to vilify him in the same manner it had misrepresented Narendra Modi when he was in Gujarat.

Reposing faith in the priest turned politician, Gadkari said one should visit Gorakhpur to see the model of politics practised by Yogi Adityanath.

Lambasting the leftist media, the Union minister said the media should focus on how the most backward and the dalits have drifted towards BJP.

Laying out the blueprint of development, Gadkari said next two years will be crucial for Uttar Pradesh as the people will talk about development of all castes and communities.

Dismissing all criticism of the manner in which governments were formed in Manipur and Goa, Gadkari said both Congress and BJP had the opportunity but BJP availed that advantage.

Here are some edited excerpts of the interview:

While BJP is celebrating its victory in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand , it’s also being criticised for the manner in which governments were formed in Manipur an Goa. The Congress calls them stolen kingdoms…

Decision taken by both parties to make Manohar Parrikar the CM. BJP was ready for Parrikar as CM. BJP was quick to react, Congress was slow. Out of 17 MLAs in Congress, 5 MLAs claim that they are apt for the CM’s post. It was difficult for Congress to elect a leader. It was easy for Congress to get the support of one party, and get to 20 seats.

But Congress urges high command to select their leader and the name suggested by the high command was not acceptable to the MLAs. BJP takes advantage of good opportunity. BJP makes quicker decisions.

After getting such a massive mandate in up, why did BJP project Yogi Adityanath as CM? It has become a conundrum for the media and everyone?

Biased nature of media is a problem for democracy. Yogi is a science graduate and a very progressive leader. JNU people have a problem with Hindutva concept. It’s the same media which vilified Modi when he was in Gujarat as chief minister. Now the media is after Yogi Adtiyanath.

Yogi Adityanath has been seen as someone who is anti-muslim and a plarising figure. Is he not at variance with ‘sabka sath sabka vikas’?

For the first time, people in UP have voted for development. Gorakpur is where one can witness the work of Yogi. BJP took the strategic political decision of not selecting an obvious leader as CM. Steps have been taken by PM Modi for national interest. We need to wait for 2 years to see the progressive approach of Yogi.

Are we going to see front-staging of issues like cow protection , love jihad, forced religious conversion?

Let’s not blame but watch UP in coming years. There are certain sections of society that portray BJP as villain, anti-Muslim, anti- backward. But the truth is, backward communities are now voting for the BJP. BJP thinks about all sections of society  – we have leaders from all castes, and that will help us in next elections. Employment to poor people and eradicating poverty is our mission in UP.
