The Gujarat Congress party has shifted over 40 MLA’s to a safe location in Karnataka capital Bengaluru after six of its MLAs quit the party ahead of the Rajya Sabha polls
“Looking at the current situation (in Gujarat), where attempts are being made to lure our members, we are taking 46 of our MLAs to Bengaluru,” said a senior party leader told media requesting anonymity.
They are expected to be in Bengaluru for at least a week with Gujarat Congress unit president Bharatsinh Solanki. Rajya Sabha election for the Gujarat seats is scheduled on August 8. Currently, legislators are staying at Eagleton The Golf Resort
The decision to keep legislators at s secure location was taken after the party suffered a major set back with of its MLAs resigned ahead of the Rajya Sabha polls. The party, however, has blamed the ruling BJP of poaching Congress MLAs using money and muscle power.
The Congress’s nominee Ahmed Patel is facing a tough fight in the state for the upcoming elections to the Upper House of Parliament from Gujarat. In the 182-member Gujarat Assembly, the strength of the Congress has now gone down to 51 from 57.
The desertions have cast a shadow on the fate of Patel in the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls.
