Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu addressed the International Conference for Development Discourse at the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) in Hyderabad. He said that development and welfare must go together to achieve a broad-based economic growth that ensures balanced development across all regions and states and across sectors.

Vice President said that one must be sensitive and accommodative to the needs of the poorest of the poor and aim to improve their lives.

Saying that inclusive economic growth must be central to our development model, the Vice President said that making people living in rural areas an integral part in the developmental process should be the target behind policy planning.

Shri Naidu said that removing inequalities in opportunities should be the first step in creating an environment of equal opportunities. He called for united efforts of government, private sector, NGOs and others.

The Vice President asked policymakers to put in place an economy that is predominantly formal, rule-driven and facilitates investment and innovation in rural services at par with urban services. Investments in modernizing agriculture, mainstreaming of rural livelihoods, creating market avenues for the rural population would ensure equitable development, he added.
