India is celebrating its 71st Independence Day today. The Indian flag is being hoisted at various spots across the country.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also unfurled the national flag at the Red Fort early on Tuesday morning. He also addressed the nation and began by wishing everyone a very happy independence day.
Thousands of security personnel, including 9,100 personnel were deployed in and around the Red Fort where the Prime Minister was present. Former PM Manmohan Singh, several ministers of the present BJP government, top bureaucrats and foreign dignitaries were also present.
“There is multi-tier security in place. The area is being monitored by CCTV cameras and there are multi-tier security checks in place for people coming to the area,” said a senior police officer.
At the Red Fort, a special team of NSG snipers and commandos formed the inner layers of the security cordon. Anti-aircraft guns were also deployed to thwart any aerial intrusion by objects like drones and projectiles.
24 Parakram Vans manned by quick reaction teams of NSG-trained commandos have been stationed in areas with high footfall to thwart any attempt by terror groups to disrupt peace. 11 of those vans were deployed in the area around the Red Fort.
Special “spotters” of the Delhi Police and paramilitary forces are keeping an eye on parking areas. Over 60 sniffer dogs of paramilitary forces and the Delhi Police will also be part of the extensive security deployment.
Not just in Delhi, Independence Day celebrations are also being held in different states across India.
