India sees highest one-day spike of over 62,000 in coronavirus cases

India logged more than 20 Lakh coronavirus cases on Friday, with the countrywide figure standing at 20,27,074.

A sharp surge of 62,538 new coronavirus patients in the last 24 hours, the Union Health Ministry said this morning, adding that number of Covid-19 linked deaths have crossed 41,000.

A total of 13,78,105 patients have recovered since the beginning of the pandemic, the government data shows. More than 850 Covid-19 patients have died since yesterday. While India’s recovery rate stood at 67.98 per cent this morning, the positivity rate that indicates the percentage of patients testing positive for the highly infectious illness stood at 10.88 per cent.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has said that 2,27,24,134 samples were tested for COVID-19 in the country till yesterday (August 6). Of these, 5,74,783 were tested yesterday.

In the last 24 hours, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh were the five states that recorded the highest surge in Covid cases.

The Health Ministry said the Centre and States and Union Territories that widespread testing has enabled more than 6 lakh tests daily for 3 days in a row. It said, from one lab in January 2020, India now has 1370 labs.

Government of India has released Rs. 890.32 cr as the second installment of the COVID-19 Emergency Response and Health System Preparedness Package to 22 States/UTs.
