An Indian Parliamentary Delegation led by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla attended the 141st Assembly of Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Belgrade, Serbia. Lok Sabha Speaker met Gabriela Cuevas Barron, President of IPU to discuss issues of mutual interests of India and IPU. They also discussed the agenda of the ongoing IPU Assembly.
The meeting of the Coordination Committee of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) was also held on the sidelines of the 141st IPU Assembly. Shashi Tharoor, MP and Ram Kumar Verma, MP attended the meeting which inter-alia discussed annual activities of APA and along with the proposals of emergency items by the members of the APA.
Indian delegates had sought support of APA members for India’s proposal on the emergency item on Climate change. The participants raised no objection to the India’s proposal and it was widely appreciated. An appropriate rebuttal of some mischievous references by the Pakistan Parliament on Jammu and Kashmir to the APA Secretariat was also made by Shashi Tharoor.
The Indian Delegation had significant achievements to its credit as during the Meeting of the crucial Asia Pacific Group two of its candidates Sasmit Patra, MP and Raksha Nikhil Khadse, MP were nominated unopposed to the IPU Committee to promote Respect for International Humanitarian Laws and the Board of Forum of Young Parliamentarians respectively.
On the sidelines of the Assembly, the leader of Indian Delegation was amongst the first to meet Gabriela Cuevas Barron, President of IPU. A wide range of issues of bilateral cooperation between IPU and Parliament of India were discussed. Later in the day, Lok Sabha Speaker, also had bilateral meetings with the Delegations of Bangladesh and Mexico. A wide range of subjects including enhanced parliamentary cooperation, capacity building, exchange of best practices were discussed during these Meetings.
Kanimozhi Karunanidhi attended the meeting of the Bureau of Women Parliamentarians. Kanimozhi Karunanidhi and Wansuk Syiem, MP also attended the meeting of the Forum of Women Parliamentarians. Sasmit Patra, MP participated in the discussion on “Mainstreaming digitalization and the circular economy to achieve SDGs, responsible, consumption and production”,
