Indrani Mukerjea, the prime accused in the Sheena Bora murder case is said to be critical after she allegedly consumed an overdose of drugs in a suspected case of suicide. The doctors now describe her condition as serious.
“The next 48 hours will be critical for her…We can not say that Indrani is out of danger before the next 48 hours. 72 hours are very critical out of which 24 hours have already passed. We will be able to say only after 48 hours whether her condition has improved or not”, Dr TP Lahane, Dean of government-run JJ Hospital told reporters on Saturday.
On Friday afternoon, Indrani was rushed form the Arthur Road Jail to JJ Hospital in Mumbai after she allegedly took an overdose of her medicines and complained of “uneasiness”.
According to Dr Lahane, Indrani was taking medication for epilepsy while in custody and initially he suspected that she consumed all her pills.
“We did not find the drug in the gastric test. If the drug must have dissolved in the body we will come to know when we get the urine and blood sample report by tomorrow evening,” the doctor explained.
The jail authorities confirmed that she was on anti-epileptic pills since September 11 as she suffered bouts of seizure.
Anti-epileptic drugs are given to control seizures and an overdose can put person in comatose state, a senior doctor said
Meanwhile Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered an enquiry into the incident late on Friday night.
The inquiry which will be overseen by DIG (prisons) will cover all angles, including how Indrani managed to get hold of the tablets, a senior official in CMO told PTI.
Prison officials, who were monitoring Indrani’s medication have been asked to explain how Indrani got hold of tablets more than her dosage.
Speculation is rife that Indrani was suffering from depression and she attempted suicide by consuming an overdose of her pills.
43-year-old Indrani, wife of former media baron Peter Mukerjea, was charged with killing her daughter Sheena Bora. She was arrested on August 25 for murdering Sheena, her daughter from a previous marriage. Indrani’s former husband Sanjeev Khanna and former driver Shyamvar Rai have also been charged in the case.
This high-profile case was initially handled by the Mumbai police under the supervision of then Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria. The case was then transferred to the CBI by the Maharashtra government. Last month, the CBI filed a murder case against the three accused.
Indrani, along with the other two accused, allegedly killed Sheena by strangling her inside a car. The body was then burnt and dumped in the jungles of Raigad district.
