Dr Kalam’s last rites to take place in Rameswaram

Kalam-homage-4Former President APJ Abdul Kalam’s last rites will take place in Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, the place where he was born. The body will be flown to Rameswaram on Wednesday morning.

Former President’s body was flown in to Delhi on Tuesday afternoon from Guwahati. The body was received at the Palam airport by President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice-President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a host of other dignitaries. All three Chiefs of Staff were also present at the airport to pay their tributes. Lt Governor of Delhi Najeeb Jung, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and Deputy CM of Delhi Manish Sisodia also lay wreathes on Dr Kalam’s body as a mark of respect.

Citizens too will pay their tributes at 10 Rajaji Marg in Delhi, where his body is kept for public viewing.

Dr. Kalam died in Shillong on Monday evening. He collapsed at the Indian Institute of Management in Shillong while giving a lecture to the students.

His body was flown to Guwahati from Shillong in an IAF chopper. Last respects were also paid to the late former President at the Guwahati airport. Several leaders including Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and senior IAF officials joined in paying tribute to India’s ‘Missile Man’.

Government has declared a seven-day state mourning period. Parliament too paid homage to the ‘People’s President’. Both Houses were adjourned for two days until 11 am on the 30th of July after tributes was paid.

Dr. Kalam, who would have turned 84 in October, died after suffering a massive cardiac arrest during a lecture at IIM Shillong. He was confirmed dead more than two hours after he was wheeled into the ICU of Bethany Hospital in a critical condition following the collapse at around 6.30 PM.

Dr. Kalam was the 11th Head of State and occupied the post between 2002 and 2007.
