Mishra replaced Jitender Singh Tomar, who resigned on Tuesday evening after being arrested for allegedly possessing fake degrees.
“I had a meeting with Arvind ji and have been informed about the development (of appointment as the law minister)”, told Mishra.
Other names doing the rounds for the vacant post were Alka Lamba, MLA from Chandani Chowk and Kailash Gahlot, MLA from Najafgarh. Former law minister Somnath Bharti’s name was also being considered.
34-year-old Kapil Mishra is a first time MLA. Mishra was being considered for a cabinet berth even in February when Aam Aadmi Party came to power with a landslide victory. Mishra was, however, made the vice-chairman of Delhi Jal Board.
Mishra is known to be a Kejriwal loyalist and has been associated with him since the India Against Corruption days.
It is said that Mishra played a crucial role when AAP faced an open rebellion from senior patry members Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan. Mishra had started a signature campaign urging all MLAs to back Kejriwal and block out rebel members.
Mishra won from the Karawal Nagar constituency by a massive margin of over 44,000 votes.
Mishra replaces Tomar, who was arrested for alleged forging of his educational qualifications. It is alleged that Tomar forged his Science graduation and Law mark sheets and a migration certificate. Tomar’s resignation was accepted by the chief minister on Tuesday night.
