Union minister VK Singh assured justice in the ghastly gangrape and murder of 8-year-old girl in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir. The incident has kept the area on the boil with local lawyers’ body demanding CBI probe alleging frame-up of the accused, whereas groups in valley demanding speedy justice.
The Jammu and Kashmir police also had to battle an angry mob on Tuesday while filing charge sheet in the local court. The charge sheet was eventually filed after a delay.
Reacting to the incident, Union minister VK Singh said “we as humans” had failed the eight-year-old girl from a minority nomadic community who was gangraped and killed in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district but she would not be denied justice.
“We have failed Ashifa as humans. But she will not be denied justice. #PunishTheSavages #RapeAndMurderOfHumanity #Kathua #JusticeForAshifa #GenerallySaying,” the Minister of State for External Affairs and former army chief said.
The child from from the nomadic Bakerwal Muslim community had disappeared from near her home in the forests next to Rasana village in Kathua on January 10. A week later, her body was found in the same area.
A Special Investigation Team formed to probe the incident has arrested eight people — retired revenue official Sanji Ram, termed a mastermind, his son Vishal Jangotra and nephew, believed to be a juvenile.
Two Special Police Officers (SPOs) Deepak Khajuria and Surinder Kumar and J&K police Assistant Sub Inspector Anand Dutta and Head Constable Tilak Raj and a local resident Parvesh Kumar have also been arrested and named in the charge sheet.
Assistant Sub Inspector Anand Dutta and Head Constable Tilak Raj in the case were arrested on charges of attempting to destroy evidence.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti said her government will not allow law to be obstructed and justice will be delivered.
“The Law will not be obstructed by the irresponsible actions & statements of a group of people. Proper procedures are being followed, investigations are on the fast track & justice will be delivered,” Mehbooba said in a tweet.
Several bollywood actors too expressed their anguished over the case and sought swift action.
