The Parliament took congnizance of the Kokrajhar attack in Assam that killed 14 people on Friday. Home Minister Rajnath Singh made a suo motu statement on the deadly attack that took place in a crowded market place in Kokrajhar.
The Home Minister told the Lower House that the Centre has asked the Assam government to hunt down perpetrators of the attack and bring them to justice.
“I have taken up with the Assam government and the security forces in the state to track down the militants involved in this attack, so that they are brought to justice for this crime against humanity,” Singh said in the Lok Sabha during the Zero Hour.
“14 innocent persons — 8 Bodo men, one woman, one child and four others lost their lives in the attack. 19 persons were seriously injured who are under treatment in various hospitals of the district and the state capital,” Singh added while giving details of the August 5 incident that took place at a crowded weekly market at Balajan Tiniali in Kokrajhar.
“The exact number of militants and the militant group involved in the attack is being investigated,” the Home Minister said.
He briefed the Parliament how at 11.30 AM, the militants, reportedly wearing army like fatigues, set ablaze some houses and shops which led to a cylinder blast and fire in the area.
“This was followed by indiscriminate firing on the crowd of shoppers,” stated Singh.
Singh said the state police and security forces had reacted swiftly and neutralised one militant whose identity is yet to be established.
He also informed the House that the injured were being well taken care of by the state government while giving details of monetary compensation announced by the government.
“I condemn this dastardly attack on innocent persons who lost their lives and on behalf of this August House, convey heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and pray to the almighty to give them strength in this difficult moment…On behalf of all the members, I also pray for the early and full recovery of those injured,” Singh said in his statement.
