Manipur gears up for 1st phase of Assembly polls

Campaigning for the first phase of Assembly Polls in Manipur will end on Thursday evening where the election is scheduled to take place on February 4.

Campaigning intensified in Manipur after PM Narendra Modi, BJP President Amit Shah addressed rallies in Ukhrul & Imphal.

All eyes are on Thoubal Assembly constituency where activist-turned-politician Irom Sharmila is contesting against three-time Chief Minister O. Ibobi Singh.

Star campaigners of BJP, Congress, National People’s Party, Naga People’s Front and Lok Janshakti Party are trying hard to draw attention of the state’s electorates to win as many seats as possible.

Manipur will witness the highest Central forces deployment for the upcoming two-phase elections.

It has deployed an additional 30 companies of Central paramilitary forces in Manipur for smooth conduct of the state assembly election.

Manipur Chief Secretary O Nabakishore told reporters here that altogether 280 companies of Central paramilitary forces will be deployed for election duty in the state which is experiencing more than three-month long economic blockade imposed by the United Naga Council along the highways of the landlocked state.

The Chief Secretary said the “state is ready for elections.”

Manipur’s 60-member State Assembly is going to polls on the fourth and eighth of the month.

Altogether 168 candidates including nine female candidates are trying their luck in the first Phase.
