Tight security in place ahead of polling in Manipur & UP

Preparations are in full swing for the smooth conduct of the first phase of Assembly polls Manipur and sixth in Uttar Pradesh.

In Manipur, Polling for the first phase will be held on Saturday for thirty-eight assembly constituencies spread across six districts. Eastern Army Commander Lt Gen Praveen Bakshi is on a two-day visit to review the security situation. Lt Gen Bakshi, arrived in Imphal on Wednesday.

The campaigning for the first of the two- phase Manipur Assembly election, scheduled for March 4, ended on Thursday.

The election is billed as a major test for the Okram Ibobi Singh-led Congress government in the state which has been in power for the last 15 years.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh were the star campaigners in the first phase, all of whom addressed multiple rallies.

The bitter poll campaign with sharp attacks and counter-attacks came to a close on Thursday evening.  49 Uttar Pradesh assembly seats spread over 7 districts of the crucial eastern region will go to polls on March 4.

The districts include Maharajganj, Kushinagar, Gorakhpur, Deoria, Azamgarh, Mau and Ballia. Polling personnel and security forces are being rushed to their respective polling stations.

Elections commission has made all arrangements for free and fair polls.

Meanwhile, the BJP unit of the state urged the Election Commission to ensure deployment of women police and para-military forces at “sensitive” polling booths in the last two phases of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls to examine burqa-clad female voters.
