84 per cent polling was recorded in the nearly two third of the total 38 seats went to the poll in the first phase of Manipur election. Election officials said that the details from remaining stations were awaited.
Long queues were visible in front of the polling booths and women voters were also seen in large numbers and no untoward incident has been reported so far, said the Election Commission.
In the first phase today, 38 seats out of a total of 60 went to polls today, including the hills and Imphal Valley.
In the first phase prominent political figures of the state like Speaker Th Lokeswar Singh, ministers I Hemochandra Singh, Govindas Konthoujam, Kh Ratankumar Singh and T Manga Vaiphei, Manipur PCC President T N Haokip, former ministers Phungzathang Tonsing, and Y Erabot Singh and BJP leader Th Chaoba Singh are in the election fray, the EC said.

The party lead by CM Okram Ibobi Singh is fighting anti-incumbency at a time when AFSPA activist Irom Sharmila’s party People’s Resurgence and Justice Alliance is making its political entry.
She will be contesting from two constituencies in Manipur, Thoubal, and Khurai. Sharmila’s fight against Ibobi Singh is the key contest in the elections.
