President Pranab Mukherjee on Friday made a strong pitch for a self-regulating mechanism in media. Appreciating the role of an independent media in a democratic set-up, the President asked the fourth pillar to have its own self-correcting mechanisms to check any aberrations.

“Regulation and restraint cannot come from any external source, but internally from system itself…from self-imposed code of conduct,” President Pranab Mukherjee said at a function in Pune. The President also presented prestigious Punyabhushan Award to Pratap Pawar, the head of the Sakal Group of newspapers.

Noting that media has an important role to play in a democracy, he said newspapers must be keepers of the conscience of the country. They have to be active participants in the continuing
endeavour to nurture a democratic republic committed to achieving justice and securing the fundamental freedoms to all its citizens.

“Democracy is not just a government of the people, for the people and by the people. It can be institutionalised only through constant dialogue,” the President said.

The President also lauded the role of the press and media in circulating the key ideas concerning people and the policies devised by the government and the state. The dialogue initiated through this process also acts as a feed back if the concerned policies are beneficial for the public or not.

“The media as a whole not only keeps people informed but also performs a very crucial function of presenting ideas and alternatives in the domain of policy formulation and implementation,” he said while speaking at the function.

C. Vidyasagar Rao, the Governor of Maharashtra presided over the function while Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis and former Union minister Sharad Pawar too were present. Award recipient Paratp Pawar is younger brother of Sharad Pawar.

In the past, iconic personalities like Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, SL Kirloskar, PL Deshpande and yoga guru BKS Iyengar have been honoured with Punyabhushan (Pride of Pune) award.
