Anand Sharma, Chairman of the Department-Related Standing Committee (DRSC) of Rajya Sabha on Home Affairs has deferred the meeting of the committee that was scheduled to be convened on June 3.

The meeting was deferred after some members expressed their inability to attend it owing to travel constraints on account of quarantine rules in different states.

Chairmen of DRSCs are empowered to convene regular meetings of the committee in Parliament House complex on their own and accordingly, Anand Sharma had convened a meeting on June 3.

Anand Sharma has sought approval of the Rajya Sabha Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu to allow members who are not able to attend such meetings in person, to be able to participate in them through video conferencing.

Rajya Sabha Chairman and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, earlier today, discussed the issue of virtual meetings of the committees and opined that they are not empowered to suspend the Rules regarding confidentiality of committee meetings and accordingly, decided to refer the matter to the Rules Committees of both the Houses of Parliament.
