MHA seeks report on communal clashes in Bengal

Union Home Ministry on Wednesday sought a report from West Bengal government on the communal clashes in North 24 Parganas. MHA’s interference in the matter comes a day after the Governor apprised Home minister Rajnath Singh of the clashes in North 24 Parganas district in Bengal.

They had a detailed discussion about the present situation in the area,” a Raj Bhavan source said.

On Tuesday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused Governor K N Tripathi of taking the union government’s side.

Clashes broke out in the district over an “objectionable” post on Facebook on Tuesday, prompting the state government to rush 400 troops to assist the police in containing the situation.

A violent mob blocked roads at several places and attacked members of a specific community. They also destroyed many shops.

Shops in Baduria were shut down as tension prevailed there and spread to adjacent areas like Keosha market, Banshtala, Ramchandrapur and Tentulia, the police said.

Meanwhile Mamata made a dramatic allegation against the Governor. Mamata accused him of threatening and insulting her and said she even thought of quitting office over this “humiliation”.

Alleging that the Governor threatened her over phone, Banerjee said, “The way he spoke taking the side of BJP, I felt insulted. I have told him that he cannot talk like this.”

“He (the governor) is behaving like a block president of BJP. He should understand that he has been nominated to the post…. We are not the servants of anyone,” a combative Banerjee told reporters at the state secretariat.

The Governor, on his part, expressed surprise over Banerjee’s “attitude and language” and claimed that he said nothing which could have threatened or humiliated the chief minister.
