Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is on a day-long trip to Prime Minister Modi’s home-state Gujarat. PM Modi himself received Netanyahu and his wife Sara at the airport.

Netanyahu and his wife were accorded a grand welcome at the Sardar Patel Airport, with folk dancers performing to traditional Gujarati beats.

Both the leaders then held a joint eight-km long roadshow, where the state rolled out a red carpet for them. The roadshow, which began at the airport, culminated at the Sabarmati Ashram.

The entire stretch for the roadshow was decked up to welcome the visiting dignitaries. 50 stages were erected on the way to showcase performances by troupes of different states to welcome the guests. Thousands of people lined up on the route that the two leaders took and heavy security was deployed.

The roadshow concluded at the Sabarmati Ashram, where Netanyahu and his wife tried their hands at weaving khadi on a charkha.

The dignitaries paid their tributes to Mahatma Gandhi and flew a kite together in the lawns of the Ashram.

Signing the guest book, Israeli PM and his wife called Mahatma Gandhi one of humanity’s great prophets of inspiration.

The Israeli PM is the third international leader whom Modi is hosting in his home state of Gujarat.

Modi and Japanese premier Shinzo Abe had held a joint roadshow during the latter’s visit here in September last year. Modi had also accompanied Chinese President Xi Jinping and his spouse to the Sabarmati riverfront during the latter’s India visit in 2014.
