India, Iran sign 9 pacts after Modi-Rouhani bilateral talks

India and Iran signed agreements in the area of security, trade, energy and double taxation avoidance after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held wide ranging and productive talks with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Saturday.

The two leaders also deliberated on regional situations during their wide-ranging talks. The Iranian President, who is on a three- day visit to India, said the current century belongs to Asia where New Delhi and Tehran have an important role to play.

“Both leaders held substantive & productive discussion on cooperation in trade & investment, energy, connectivity, defence & security & regional issues,” External Affairs Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted.

Addressing a joint press event with Rouhani, Prime Minister Modi said the visit by the Iranian president shows how the two sides want to deepen cooperation in key areas, including connectivity. Giving details of their comprehensive talks, Modi said they discussed threats posed by terrorism, drug trafficking and other challenges.

On his part, Rouhani said, “We are determined to combat terrorism and extremism.” The Iranian leader also said that regional conflicts must be resolved through diplomacy and political initiatives.

Earlier in the day, President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted President Hassan Rouhani at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj also called on Rouhani and discussed various issues with him.

Iran has already expressed willingness to share its vast oil and natural gas resources with India for the prosperity of its people and offered to simplify visa norms to strengthen the relations between the two countries.

During the talks, the Prime Minister appreciated the way the Iranian leader provided leadership in developing strategically-important Chabahar Port.

Apart from tax pact, the two sides also exchanged instrument to ratify the extradition treaty as well as to simplify visa process.
