Law-genA sessions court in Maharashtra has awarded death sentence to three men who were convicted for the rape and murder of a 15-year-old girl in Kopardi village in 2016.

The verdict comes 16 months after a minor girl was brutally raped and murdered in the remote village of Kopardi in Ahmednagar district on July 13, 2016. The incident had triggered widespread protest from the Maratha community because the victim belonged to the same community.

Additional Special Judge Suvarna Kevale awarded the death sentence to convicts Jitendra Babulal Shinde, Santosh Gorakh Bhawal and Nitin Gopinath Bhailume.

On November 18, the court had convicted the three men on charges of rape, murder and criminal conspiracy.

On October 7, the Ahmednagar Police had filed a charge sheet that ran into over 350 pages before the court. The charge sheet said the accused were charged under IPC sections 302 (murder), 376 (rape) and relevant sections of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
